ISAPS Conference Turkey

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) is the largest body for board-certified Plastic Surgeons performing Aesthetic Surgery. ISAPS membership includes the world’s best-known and respected reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeons in over 100 countries on every continent, reflecting the true international mission of the organization. The ISAPS charter was signed at the United Nations in NYC. It is represented by many countries speaking of the society’s diversity and, through its members and world-renowned plastic Surgeons, drives the quality of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery worldwide. ISAPS organizes biennial congresses across destinations. This year ISAPS – 2022 was hosted in Istanbul. This congress was attended by over 1500 delegates and included talks by keynote speakers, master classes, and know-your-experts—free papers from presenters and poster presentations. The emphasis was on patient safety and surgical excellence.

Procedures Discussed:

Topics that were covered fell into the categories of

  • Body ( Liposculpting in 3 Dimensions, abdominoplasty, fat micrografting, post-Bariatric (body contouring )

  • Breast ( Breast augmentation, Breast lifts, and Breast reduction )

  • Face (blepharoplasty, Facelifts, brow lifts)

  • Non-surgical procedures like fillers, botulinum toxins, thread lifts, and lasers.

Everything and anything latest was being discussed, debated, and the consensus was formed regarding the best surgical practice to achieve supreme patient satisfaction

Here are some of the delegates who participated and were the other spokes persons in the conference:

Indian Plastic Surgeons' presence at ISAPS:

  • Talking about India’s representation, ISAPS has over 240 members from India and is the fastest growing country in terms of surgeon memberships giving a clue that Aesthetic Surgery procedures are rising exponentially year after year.

My Contribution:

    • My contribution to the conference was by presenting a paper titled ” IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE IN GIANT BREAST REDUCTIONS-A 22 YEAR EXPERIENCE “. My experiences in reducing complication rates were shared with an international audience, and this session was chaired by Dr.Jose Parreira from Portugal and Dr.Ivar Van Heijningen from Belgium.

My presentation on “Breast Reduction procedure and experience”, techniques with Discussed on Analysis of Breast Reduction Complications Derived from the BRAVO Study.

The complication data revealed several significant features:
  • Increased risk and number of complications
  • Delayed Healing correlated direlty with reseciton weight and inversely with increasing age
  • A vertical incision may be assodicated with increased incidence of complications
  • The presence of complications had no negative effect on improvement
The methods to overcome these complications are found to be:
  • Closed Incision Negative-Pressure Therapy Is Associated with Decreased Surgical-Site Infections – CiNPT
  • Incisional Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for Prevention of Wound Healing Complications Following Reduction Mammaplasty

With these therapies, ciNPT dressing was found to be more effective and the attempts to overcome complications, resulted in:

  • Enhanced Tissue Perfusion
  • Reduces Mechanical Tension
  • Reduces Oedema
This in turn helps to attain :
  • Enhances wound healing
  • Reduces Infections Rates
  • Reduced seroma & Haematoma rates
My presentation on “Breast Reduction procedure and experience”, techniques with
  • Superomeidal/medial pedicle breast reduction using vertical pattern or J pattern.
  • Peroperative planning is the key
Discussed and shared complications that may occur with
  • Acute, Sub Acute, and Long term
  • Nipple areola necrosis – discussed risk factors
  • Wound healing complications

Thus concluding with CiNPT dressings, the complications dropped to zero, as you can see from the comparison table.

On Surgical Instrumentation:

  • The congress lasted five days and consisted of brilliant lectures, video presentations, and an exhaustive discussion after every session.

Technology in Plastic Surgery cannot be left behind and was adequately highlighted in the industry-sponsored symposia. Exhibitors from around the globe displayed their surgical instruments and made massive sales during the breaks that the organizers had arranged for surgeons to buy instrumentation of the highest quality.

Overall, considering that COVID had put on breaks for attending conferences, this edition of the meeting participated in the highest numbers ever, and looking at the promise of such conferences, the next edition at Cartagena, Columbia, in 2024  will be eagerly marked on all Plastic Surgeons to come together for yet another academic and social extravaganza
