Known as fat transfer, is a procedure to transfer fat from one area of the body to another through fat injection. Adipose fat is extracted using liposuction which is then processed and purified fat is reinjected into the area needing improvement.
Fat is extracted from a donor area using liposuction techniques. This is best accomplished by manual methods using thin liposuction cannulas with small holes.
The fat is then processed with decanting and centrifugation to separate debris, excess fluid, and dead cells from the viable adipose fat cells. An alternate method is to wash the fat with a sterile saline solution.
The fat is reinjected in small droplets throughout the subcutaneous tissue of the recipient area. This is to ensure good blood supply to every fat droplet so that the fat graft can survive.
You may encounter bruising, swelling, and soreness for a period of 5-7 days.
The fine port site sutures may be removed after 5-7 days. You may be advised to wear a supportive bra for a period of 4-6 weeks. You may be advised to return back to work in 7-10 days for major breast augmentations.
You may be advised to start lymphatic massages once the suture lines are dry. This helps in evening out the operated areas, reduces swelling, pain and in achieving better contours. Avoid excessive movements and strenuous activities for a period of one month.
You may perceive the result immediately after surgery, however due to over correction, it may take some time for the fat to resorb. You may perceive the final result in 3-6 months’ time.
As with any other surgical procedures, the expected risks are bleeding, infection, fat necrosis, and cyst formation. Fat necrosis, and cyst formation are very rare in our experience because of adherence to fat transfer principles like microdroplet deposition, layered delivery and nanofat transfer.
To overcome the problem of fat resorption by the body, your team of surgeons usually over correct the area by 25-30%. However, the resorption rates are very less in micro and Nanofat transfers because of the better blood supply of the grafted fat, by the healthy surrounding tissue.
Breast implants are an alternative. Women who are seeking significant improvement of their breast size and having minimal sagging of breasts, silicone implants may be a better option.
In few instances, a second procedure or even a third may be advised as deposition of larger quantities of fat in the same sitting may increase the chances of resorption, and hence smaller volume injection in multiple sittings is recommended.
Results are long lasting with some, long term results lasting for more than 15 years.
