Laser treatment

Laser hair reduction is a noninvasive method of removal of unwanted hair. It can be a good option for those with excess body hair who are looking for a way to effectively reduce or remove hair from various body areas.

Principle of laser hair reduction

Stage 1

Diode Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin pigment in the hair follicles. The heat from the laser light transmits from hair shaft to the the bulge area which is the growth centre of the hair.

Stage 2

The pigment in the hair attracts the laser, so darker hair absorbs the laser more effectively, which is why people with dark hair and light skin are ideal candidates for laser hair removal. Patients with dark skin typically need to be treated with a special type of laser that detects the hair against their skin.

Stage 3

Those with light hair are less prone for laser effect and they are also less likely to experience drastic results as the laser doesn’t focus well on non pigmented hair. Laser hair removal is not effective on blonde, gray, or white hairs.

What to expect during the procedure?

  • Laser hair removal is an office based procedure.
  • The procedure is completely painless and doesn’t require any numbing cream.
  • Before the procedure, our specialist laser technician takes a note of hair character (including colour, thickness, area of concern, skin colour), cleans the treatment area, then and prepares the area of concern with sterile shaving machine.
  • Then our technician, focuses a beam of high-energy diode laser light at the desired area in a smooth and painless manner.
  • During the procedure, everyone in the room needs to wear special protective eyewear to prevent eye damage from the laser.
  • Hair removal works best on people with light complexions who have dark hair.
  • This is because the pigment contrast makes it easier for the laser to target the hair, travel into the follicle, and destroy the follicle.
  • People with dark skin or light hair may need more treatments than others and may find that more hair grows back.

The time depends upon the size of the area you are concerned. The bigger the areaᅠyou would like to be treated, the longer the procedure it takes. Small areas likeᅠupper lip, can take as little as a couple of minutes while larger areas such as theᅠchest can take an hour or more. Whole body laser may take as longer as 3-4 hours.

Avoid sunlight exposure as much as possible before the procedure, and always useᅠa sunscreen. The tanned skin makes the contrast between hair and skin less visibleᅠand reduces the efficiency of the treatment.ᅠAvoid shaving the area 3-4 days before the procedure as recognition of the hairᅠshaft by the technician helps in targeting as many hair follicles as possible.ᅠAvoid waxing and other depilatory methods as they pull the hair out of the follicleᅠand leaves no pigmented to be targeted.

The number of laser sessions depend upon the thickness of hair. For normal peopleᅠ5-6 sessions will be sufficient, but women with coarse hair due to hormonal issues,ᅠmay take 10-12 sessions to achieve the desired result. Dark skin makes the contrastᅠless visible and may result in more treatment sessions. People with light skin andᅠdark hair, may get away with fewer sessions.

Depending upon the growth cycle, laser should be repeated at 4-6 weeks interval.ᅠDiode laser and Nd:Yag laser are the commonest and safest lasers used for hairᅠremoval. They all work by targeting the hair pigment also known as melanin. Thatᅠis why laser gives best results with dark, thick and coarse hair and not with fineᅠhair. This melanin pigment is most abundant in the early growth phase (anaphase)ᅠof the hair. Hence, this is the time one should come for a repeat session.

With each session of laser, you may expect 10-20 percent of hair reduction. Itᅠtypically takes between three and eight sessions for permanent hair loss. After aᅠdetailed examination of your area of concern, we can give you a better idea of howᅠmany treatment sessions you may need. Also, you will likely need a touch-upᅠsession yearly to maintain effect, if the need be.

Swelling, redness, temporary discomfort are the common side effects after laser.ᅠRarely, it may cause burns, scars, blisters, infections, permanent changes in skinᅠcolor if performed by untrained people using non medical lasers. So carefullyᅠchoosing a skilled medical professional (plastic surgeon or dermatologist) canᅠgreatly reduce these risks.

Yes, laser hair reduction is permanent and the results depend upon the quality andᅠcolour of hair and skin and also upon some predisposing factors like hormonalᅠissues as in PCOD.

The recovery time after the procedure is minimal and most patients can return to work as normal directly after. Just as wearing sunscreen before the procedure is important, so is continuing to wear it after the procedure. This will help prevent further irritation.
