WHAT IS IT

Is Lip Reduction Right for You?

Lip reduction is suitable for patients whose upper lip, lower lip, or both are larger than is proportionate to the rest of the face. The decision isn’t only about size — it’s about facial harmony, function, and what you want to feel comfortable with when you look in the mirror.

Decision Logic
Lip reduction is likely right if you:
  • Have lips that feel disproportionate to your facial features
  • Have asymmetry between upper and lower lip
  • Have inherited fuller lips that you've never been comfortable with
  • Have functional issues — difficulty closing the mouth, drooling, or speech impact
  • Are over 18 (lip anatomy stabilises by adulthood)
Lip reduction may not be right if you:
  • Are at a healthy weight that's likely to change soon (lips are sensitive to weight fluctuation)
  • Have unrealistic expectations — lip reduction refines, it doesn't transform a face
  • Have an active oral infection or untreated dental condition
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (defer until later)
  • Have keloid-prone scarring history (assessment required)

A consultation with Dr. Vasu confirms candidacy. Most patients who walk in with this concern are good candidates — we screen at the consultation, not at booking.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How lip reduction surgery is performed

Lip reduction is performed under local anaesthesia, in a sterile day care theatre, in approximately 60 minutes. The technique used by Dr. Vasu places all incisions on the inside of the lip — meaning when you smile, talk, or look in the mirror, no scar is visible.

A precisely calculated strip of tissue is removed from the inner surface of the lip. The lip is then closed with fine, dissolving sutures along the wet line — entirely hidden inside the mouth. The amount of tissue removed is mapped at consultation based on your facial proportions and what you want to achieve.

01

Pre-procedure consult

Dr. Vasu examines your earlobe, discusses the type of repair, and confirms re-piercing options.

15–20 MIN

02

Local anaesthesia

A small injection numbs only the earlobe. You’re awake and comfortable throughout.

03

The repair

Torn or stretched edges are precisely aligned and sutured using fine plastic surgery technique to minimise scarring.

04

Discharge

You go home the same day. Most patients drive themselves; a companion is welcome but not required.

Surgical Details
Removed
  • A precise strip of inner mucosal tissue
  • Excess submucosal tissue contributing to fullness
  • Asymmetry, where present
Preserved
  • The vermilion border (the natural lip line)
  • Lip sensation and movement
  • Natural lip shape — refined, not erased

Anaesthesia and comfort

Local anaesthesia means the lip area is fully numb, but you remain awake. Most patients describe the procedure as comfortable — they feel pressure, no pain. Dr. Vasu and the team talk you through it.

Recovery & discharge

Brief observation. Ice pack applied. Aftercare instructions, prescription, and follow-up scheduled. You walk out the same day.

30 min

Most patients arrive in the morning and are home by lunchtime. You will need someone to drive you home — talking and chewing will be uncomfortable for the first 24 hours.

RECOVERY

Healing, in five stages.

FIRST 24–48 HOURS

Day 1–2

Significant swelling. Cold liquids and soft food only. Pain manageable with prescribed medication.
Day 3–5

Day 3–5

Swelling reduces. Soft solid foods become possible. Speech still slightly affected. Sutures dissolve gradually.
Week 1

Week 1

Most patients return to work and social life. Lip looks fuller than the final result — this is normal swelling, not the outcome.
WEEK 2

Week 2

Most visible swelling resolves. Lip starts to settle. You begin to see the new shape.
Week 6-7

Week 6-7

Final result settles. Tissue has fully healed. The shape you see now is the shape you keep.

” A torn earlobe is small. The scar that replaces it stays visible for years. The difference between one that fades and one that doesn’t is the surgeon.”

What to avoid

  • Hot food and drinks for 48 hours
  • Hard or chewy food for the first week
  • Lip products, gloss, or makeup on the lips for 5 days
  • Smoking and alcohol for 7 days minimum (smoking significantly impairs healing)
  • Strenuous exercise for 7 days
  • Direct sun on the lips without SPF for 4 weeks

Following aftercare carefully matters more than most patients realise. The biggest single factor in a good lip reduction result — outside the surgery itself — is how well you protect the lip during week one.

When Lip Reduction is Combined with Other Facial Surgery

Lip reduction is sometimes performed as part of a larger facial harmonisation plan — alongside rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, or facelift. When combined with other surgery, the procedure may be performed under general anaesthesia in a hospital operating theatre rather than as a standalone day care procedure. Recovery, cost, and timeline are different in this scenario.

If you’re considering lip reduction as part of broader facial surgery, this is discussed at consultation and planned together.

I’d been hiding my torn earlobes under my hair for nearly a decade. Thirty minutes with Dr. Vasu and they were gone. The scar is honestly invisible. I wish I’d done it years ago.

Calm, surgical, completely judgment-free. I had stretched lobes from old gauges and Dr. Vasu treated it as a serious repair, not a cosmetic afterthought. Healed beautifully.

I went to two dermatologists before I came here. The difference in technique is immediately obvious. This is a plastic surgeon doing a plastic surgeon’s job.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions, answered honestly.

How do I know if I'm a good candidate?

No. Dr. Vasu’s technique places all incisions on the inside of the lip, along the wet line. When you smile, talk, or look in the mirror, nothing is visible. This is the single biggest reason patients choose this technique over older methods.

Is lip reduction permanent?

Yes. The tissue removed does not grow back. The result is a one-time, permanent refinement. The only thing that can change the shape afterwards is significant weight gain or weight loss, which can affect facial fullness in general.

How painful is lip reduction surgery?

The procedure itself is comfortable — you feel pressure, not pain, because the area is fully numbed with local anaesthesia. The first 48 hours afterwards involve manageable soreness, controlled with prescribed medication. Most patients describe it as more inconvenient than painful.

When can I return to work?

Most patients return to work within 5–7 days. If your work involves significant talking, public-facing roles, or videoconferencing, plan for 7–10 days. Visible swelling in week one is normal, but it is noticeable.

Will my lips look unnatural after surgery?

Not when planned correctly. The whole point of Dr. Vasu’s approach is proportion — refining the lip to suit the face, not reducing it to a target measurement. The vermilion border, the natural lip line, is preserved. The shape stays yours, just refined.

How much tissue is actually removed?

The amount is mapped at consultation, based on your facial proportions and what you want to change. It varies from a few millimetres for subtle refinement to more for significant reduction. There is no fixed amount — it’s tailored.

Can lip reduction be reversed?

Once tissue is removed, it cannot be put back surgically. If a patient changed their mind years later and wanted fuller lips, dermal fillers could add volume — but this is discussed thoroughly at consultation, and we don’t proceed unless you are clear and confident.

Does insurance cover lip reduction surgery?

Generally, no — lip reduction is classified as aesthetic surgery and is not covered by most Indian health insurance policies. We provide proper invoicing for any reimbursement attempts. (Exception: if there is a documented functional issue — speech, drooling, mouth closure — partial coverage may be possible. Discussed at consultation.)

What does lip reduction surgery cost in Hyderabad?

Pricing is shared at the consultation, where the exact scope is confirmed. We commit to full transparency on cost before any procedure is scheduled — no surprises later. [Pricing detail pending Peetu/Dr. Vasu decision — Option A band, B consultation only, or C standalone procedure pricing.]

Can I have lip reduction along with rhinoplasty or other facial surgery?

Yes. Many patients plan it as part of a broader facial harmonisation. When combined with other surgery, it’s typically performed under general anaesthesia rather than as a standalone day care procedure. Discussed and planned at consultation.

How long does the result last? Will my lips get bigger again with age?

The result is permanent. Lips do change subtly with age — they thin slightly over decades, like all facial tissue. But the proportion correction from the procedure stays. You will not “regrow” the tissue removed.

Restore what matters. One small repair.

A consultation gives you clarity. Dr. Vasu assesses your lips and face in proportion, walks you through what’s possible, what isn’t, what it costs, and what to expect — honestly. You leave with enough information to make a confident decision, with no pressure to book the procedure that day.
